The Difference between Ultra Violet and Ozone
BC International cc distributes
a range of corona discharge and Ultra Violet ozone generators as well as
Ultra violet radiation equipment. The reason for this is that bc equipment
can be applied to several different applications where one or the other
systems would not have worked.
Ozone is effective on the basis of contact with a pollutant in air or water
where it works by oxidation of the material.
Ultra violet radiation works on the principal of exposing the microrganisms
to radiation to eliminate them.
Ozone can be generated using the Corona Discharge system or using Ultra
Violet lamps. Although the ozone produced is the same, it is possible to
achieve higher concentrations of ozone using corona discharge. (e.g. compare
Dishwasher with Oven cleaner).
Also UV ozone generators are limited in their output compared to corona.
Ultra violet radiators can be utilised in occupied areas for preventing
cross contamination in occupied areas, such as a Doctors waiting room or
a Hospital wards. In these situations, the required level of ozone may be
too high to be effective. Therefore UV could be used, where the air in the
area is drawn past a UV radiator to sterilise the air. In addition to this,
a small amount of ozone could be introduced in to the equipment to ensure
elimination of odours and complete sterilisation within the unit itself.
However in other cross contamination problem areas such as cheese factories
or fruit markets the UV radiator will not be as effective as Ozone because
of the shadowing effect and unexposed areas whereas Ozone as a gas will
penetrate all areas.
The UV ozone generator is more tolerant to high humidity situations, than
CD (corona discharge), such as in a cheese factory or by the Coast. UV generators
and UV radiators require regular replacement of the lamps (normally once
per annum) whereas the dielectrics on corona units are much longer lasting
. For this reason it is imperative that the lamps are kept out of site of
occupants to avoid radition.
