KYDEX®
High impact, fire-rated injection molding compound
DESCRIPTION
KYDEX® compound is a fire retardant acrylic/PVC injection
molding compound that offers exceptional impact resistance, chemical
resistance, and processability, allowing production of parts which
are difficult to mold and/or intended for demanding end-use applications.
FEATURES
- High Impact Resistance:
Depending on grade KYDEX compound offers Notched Izod impact resistance
to 18 ft-lbs/in. (953 J/m), providing extreme resistance to cracking
and abuse.
- Broad Chemical Resistance:
Parts molded of KYDEX compound exhibit exceptional resistance
to a wide range of caustic and acidic chemicals, including harsh
cleaning agents and solvents.
- Extreme Fire Retardancy:
Depending on grade KYDEX compound carries fire ratings of UL STD
94V-0 and FAR 25.853(a), meeting flammability standards for electrical
equipment, aircraft, automotive, and mass transit vehicle applications.
- Color stability:
Depending on grade parts molded of KYDEX compound exhibit long-term
indoor UV color stability. Exterior weatherability is dependent.
- Depending on grade KYDEX compound
exhibits flexural modulus to 440,000psi (3031 MPa).
APPLICATIONS
- Electrical equipment
- Business machines
- Computer equipment
- Medical equipment
- Appliances
- Aircraft interiors
- Mass transit vehicle interiors
- Automotive interiors
- Other high performance applications
PROCESSING CHARACTERISTICS
Although KYDEX compound exhibits excellent thermal stability, observing
the following parameters will produce the best results:
- Melt temperature should not
exceed 400°F (204°C)
- Use the smallest
cushion possible 1/4 in. (6.35mm)
- Screw should
reach back position (5 seconds before mold opens)
- Residence time
in the mold should be minimized (less than 10 minutes recommended)
- Back pressure
should be set in the range of 100 to 400 psi (.69MPa-2.75Mpa)
to ensure a homogeneous melt
- Mold neutralization
after use is recommended
